One of our bookkeeppers, James Thomas, volunteered with Straatpastoraat in The Hague.
"The organisation offers mental and psychological support to the most diverse group of people within the city. The pastors act as a confidant and coach relating to the mental and practical life problems.
This is an organization that works from where the people need it most: On the streets, the public parks and city squares.
I was friendly welcomed, being introduced to the rest of the team and volunteers, followed by instructions what had to be done this day.
It was a special occasion, the annual BBQ, and everyone was very excited and eager to make the occasion a successful one.
It was a simple but challenging task nevertheless; make everyone feel welcome and safe and have everyone leave with plenty of food eaten and a smile on their face. I was part of the serving team, making sure everyone got all the food they wanted.
I am very happy I had this experience and seeing the happy faces of these ‘misfortunates’ really touched me.
It is hard to imagine a life like theirs, but having the ability to make a difference, even if it’s just for a day, is worth every second invested. "
